ASID Awards Pacific Home Studio Merit for Residential Green Design
10/10/2008
Honolulu, Hawaii…. Pacific Home Studio was recently honored with the “Award of Merit for Residential Green Design” from the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) 2008 Design Excellence Awards. Pacific Home Studio’s design team for this project included Jennifer Johnson and Isla Schmidt. The two women created the award-winning design for Maui’s custom home referred to as the “Good Home” – constructed and designed to be the most environmentally conscious development in the Islands.
The Good Home represents the now fully realized conception of “Good for you, good for the environment and good for the future.” The Good Home is part of Towne Development of Hawai‘i, Inc., a subsidiary of Zilber Ltd. It was designed and built in Koa at Kehalani on Maui. The firm hired Pacific Home Studio, the interior design subdivision of Pacific Home, a home furnishings store in Honolulu, to create the environmentally sensitive interiors.
“The house has very clean architectural lines so we wanted to pair those features with a fresh, clean Pacific interior design,” says Jennifer Johnson, co-owner of Pacific Home. “Our challenge was to find environmental products that met the standards and overall green goals of the building.”
The Good Home is the first home to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certification in Hawaii. All certified projects receive a LEED plaque, which is the nationally recognized symbol demonstrating that a building is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work.”
Isla Schmidt explains, “We chose furnishings from companies that work with sustainable, recycled or organic materials. We also designed many of our own key pieces such as a freestanding mahogany bed with a screen-like headboard.”
In addition to pieces designed by the Pacific Home Studio team, they selected furniture and accessories from their Pacific Home showroom that were both green and minimalist – such as chairs by Herman Miller, carpet tiles by FLOR, and bedding by Amenity.
